Florida law protects the relationship between a client and a psychotherapist. Information about the counseling relationship cannot be disclosed without written permission.

Exceptions include:

• I am mandated to report suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse.
• If a client is threatening him/herself and I suspect with reason the intent, with a plan, serious bodily harm, I am mandated to contact the intended victim (if known) and the proper authorities.
• If a client intends to harm him/herself, I my intent is to ensure the safety of the client. If cooperation is not received, action will be taken to ensure the safety of the client regardless of permission is received by the client.
